From July 17th to September 4th, great characters, performers and protagonists of classical music at the Cloister of S. Francesco in Sorrento
Twelve evening musical events, from July 17 to September 4, 2024, at 9:15 pm, at the Cloister of San Francesco, dedicated to the characters, interpreters and protagonists of great classical music, with an artistic kermesse and prestigious programs, almost all exclusive and absolute previews for Naples and the Province.
Sorrento Classica opens, on July 17, with the famous bass Carlo Lepore (“Sorrento Classica Prize for Opera”), alongside his daughter Giulia Lepore, soprano and pianist Maurizio Iaccarino, with the captivating program “A journey through the Opera”: from Pergolesi to Puccini.
July 23, the famous flamenco guitar virtuoso Carlos Piñana & Puro Flamenco Dance Percussion Ensemble (Paolo Monaldi – percussion, Lara Ribichini and Stefano Arrigoni “El Farrubio” – flamenco dance and palmas) will pay homage to Flamenco Art with the program “Cuerpo & Alma”.
July 25, the child prodigy of the violin of Slovak-Hungarian origin, Teo Gertler (born in 2008), alongside pianist Antonio Gomena, will pay homage to masterpieces by Beethoven, Wieniawski, Ernst and Tchaikovsky. Despite his very young age, Gertler is highly appreciated in Europe for his sound, interpretative sensitivity and technique, typical of the most famous soloists and virtuosos of our time. He boasts performances with some of the most important symphony orchestras in the world and conductors, such as Iván Fischer, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Adam Medveczky, and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Virtuosi Orchestra.
July 27, special gala event with the extraordinary participation of the famous actress and director Valeria Golino (fresh from the success of her latest film “L’arte della Gioia”, based on the posthumous novel by Goliarda Sapienza) for the performance of “Ghost”, with and by Maurizio Mastrini – pianist & Sorrento Classica Festival Orchestra, conducted by Paolo Scibilia. “Ghost” is the new and acclaimed album by the famous “Pianista al Contrario”. Valeria Golino will receive for the occasion the “Sorrento Classica Award for Musical Cinematography”, a career that saw her at the beginning of her career and made her famous, in the role of Countess Giulia Guicciardi, in the famous film – masterpiece, on the life of Ludwig van Beethoven “Immortal Beloved” (1994), directed by Bernard Rose.
July 30, protagonist on the Sorrento stage one of the most important orchestras in Europe, the Berliner Symphoniker – kammerorchester, conducted by Gudni Emilsson and with the soloists: Alexander Hülshoff – cello and Giuseppe Nova – flute. The program includes music by Skalkottas, Haydn, Mozart, Verdi, Respighi. Acclaimed in all the greatest halls in the world, alongside conductors and soloists of caliber, such as Lior Shambadal and Luciano Pavarotti, the orchestra was founded in 1967 as the Symphonisches Orchester Berlin and in 1990 it was given its current name, from the union of the Berliner Symohonisches Orchester and of the then Deutsche Symphonieorchester.
August 1st, the great “Tsarina” of Russian pianism, Oxana Yablonskaya, a wonderful example of pianistic senility (born in 1938), today at the height of her seventy-year and prestigious international career, will perform masterpieces by Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Chopin and her transcription of Gluck’s Opera “Orpheus and Euridice”. For the occasion, she will be awarded the “Sorrento Classica Career Award”. Originally from Russia and a naturalized American citizen since 1977, Oxana Yablonskaya is defined by international critics as “the best kept secret of the Soviet Union”. Awarded the prestigious title of “Soloist of the Moscow Philharmonic” and “Artist Emeritus of Melodya (the main state recording company of the former Soviet Union), she is fully included among the elite Russian artists, of the caliber of: Gilels, Richter, Rostropovich, Oistrakh and Kogan. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory with the legendary maestros Aleksandre Goldenweiser and Tatiana Nikolayeva, she was the winner of the first prizes at the “Jacques Long-Thibaud” competition (Paris 1963), “Rio de Janeiro” (1965) and “Beethoven” (Vienna 1969). Best known as one of the finest interpreters of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, she was also the first absolute interpreter of Rodion Shchedrin’s “Basso Ostinato”, which became her signature piece. In addition to her enormous success as a concert pianist and recording artist, Yablonskaya has served as Professor of Piano at the Julliard School in New York.
August 5, Piano Trio of the Soloists of the Teatro alla Scala, with the first parts of the famous Milanese opera house (Francesco de Angelis – violin, Alfredo Persichilli –
cello, Roberto Paruzzo – piano) and the program “Note scaligere”: Gli Spettri. Music by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky
August 7, the fascinating and virtuoso Korean violinist, Kim Hae-Ji, returns to the stage in Sorrento, with the taiwanese-american pianist, Hsin-I Huang. Hae-Ji is the winner of First Prizes at the international competitions “New York International Artist”, “Carnegie Hall” and “Ruth Widder”. She permanently holds the position of first violin of the “New World Symphony & Chamber New World Chamber Orchestra of Seul and lieder of the “Borromeo String Quartet”. Huang boasts numerous performances at the Carnegie Hall in New York, alongside renowned soloists. The duo, among the prestigious chamber groups of South-East Asia, presents the program “Euro-Asian musical journey”, with masterpieces by Grieg, Ravel and Franck.
August 9, the famous Italian singer-songwriter Pierdavide Carone, alongside the Sorrento Classica Festival Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Leonardo Quadrini, will perform the program “Dalla and Sorrento: Tribute to Lucio Dalla”. The name of the latter remained linked to Sorrento for his timeless composition “Caruso”, written in Sorrento in 1986, at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, in homage to the very famous tenor. Carone is considered the last vocal “protégé” of Lucio Dalla, having participated alongside him at the 2012 Sanremo Festival, finishing in fifth place. Fame preceded in 2010, for his participation and as third place in the ninth edition of the talent show “Amici” by Maria De Filippi.
August 12, Enrico Fagnoni – piano & Stefano Valanzuolo – narrator and text, prominent figures in the national artistic scene, with the program “Off Side Story”: Metropolitan story freely adapted from “West Side Story”. Fagnoni, of Neapolitan origin, boasts an international career as a virtuoso, improviser and composer of the keyboard. Appreciated since he was very young as a performer alongside Nino Rota of the clarinetist Benny Goodman, he became famous already in 1978, for his extraordinary acting in the role of Giuseppe Verdi – child, in the famous Rai Uno television drama of the same name. Valanzuolo is a well-known music critic, host and author of national programs, such as Radio3 Suite. September 1, Elena Vallebona – first solo harp of the orchestra of the Teatro S. Carlo in Naples will perform the captivating program “Colors and shades, rhythms, dynamics and cadences”: The French harp repertoire. Music by Tournier, Faurè, Rameau, Godefroid. The artist, very young, boasts an international career, and first prizes at prestigious international harp competitions, such as “Marcel Tournier, “Journées de la Harpe en Île de France”, “Harp Academy di Hannover”.
The review concludes, on September 4, with Richard Galliano, one of the most famous and acclaimed accordion-jazz soloists in the world, interpreter of the program “Passion Galliano”: Around Gershwin. Gallian, a true free spirit in the world of music, through his new Album, offers the public a timeless melody, a sonic odyssey where the boundaries blur and the eras mix, weaving a vibrant musical carpet where the soul of George Gershwin dialogues with his.
